Championship Night Recap

Last week was our 30th Championship Night.

The early game was our famous ‘Kiss your Sister’ Bronze Medal Match between the 3rd seed Swedes and the 4th seed Americanos!

Kiss your sister

All yellow and blue in the opening period as the Swedes jump out on top 3-1 after 1.  The nordic boys continue their strong play in the 2nd frame out scoring the USA 2-1 for a 5-2 lead.  No quit in the Americans as they score twice in the first 7 minutes to make this a 1 goal game.  Goalies Senkowski and Ide took over the final 8 minutes of this epic tilt and shut out all shooters.  Final Score Sweden 5 USA 4.  Swedes win the Bronze ‘Kiss your Sister” game.

USA finish the year 4th and finish the playoffs 4th.

Goals for the Swedes 2 from the wood of Patrick Sharp and singles from Joe Peacock, Mike Rukavina and David Rinaldo with the game winner.  For the Americans Rob leenaars, Jim Maguire, George Karabinis and Rob McKean.  Sweden went 0-1 on the PP USA was 0-0.  Players of the Game went to USA Greek Freak George Karabinis.

And for the Swedes young Patrick Sharp.

Awww and his wife and the cutest baby girl were there to cheer Dady on.

The Oldtimer Stanley Cup was next.  As the almost perfect Finland season, only one miscue vs the Americans, looked to cap off their record breaking season with Gold.  But in front of them was the Sand Bagging Canadians.  The Canuckleheads finished dead last after the regular season but got hot in the playoffs and were looking to shock the world in the final game of our 30th season.  The opening frame was tense and only one goal scored for the Finns.  The 2nd period Finland flexed their mighty muscle and took it to the Canadians scoring 3 unanswered goals.  2 of which were short handed too and that just took the wind out of the red and white.  Finland made it 5-0 early in the 3rd.  Canada got on board with 2 quick goals with 5 minutes gone but Finland scored again making it 6-2 game.  Both teams got 1 more goal each and Finland wins the Gold with a solid 7-3 effort.

Canada wins the Silver medal.

Some unnecessary commotion at the end was not good to see.  Finland went 0-2 on the PP but scored 2 short handed goals.  Canada was 0-1.  Canada got goals from Tom Marshall, Denis Desrosiers and Leo Brideau.  Finland got 2 goals each from Joel May and Marcelo Diluzio and singles from Joe Cosentino, Brian Spence and Murray Barrett.  Players of the Game went to Finlands Joel May and to Canada’s Bobby Ide.

Our final individual award was a unanimous choice as Finlands Dr. Joel May wins the Conn Smythe Award for Playoff MVP.  Congrats Mr. May.  Well deserved as I saw the short handed goal he scored and it was a beauty!!!!

So our 30th season is in the books.  Awesome year boys.  Record breaking low penalty minutes and lots of fun on and off the ice.  Hope you enjoyed it well.  Please reach out to us a soon as you can if you did not get us your 2017-2018 apps and deposits and if you are not returning please let us know asap.  All sweater and socks also need to be returned so we can wash and get ready for next season.

Have a safe and happy summer and see you all on the ice in the Fall for our 31st season of Port Credit Oldtimers Hockey League.

2016-2017 Individual Award Winners Announcement

All the voting is in and we are very proud to announce our 30th season 2016-2017 Individual Award winners.

The Art Ross trophy for League Leading scorer goes to USA #5 Dan Barrett. Dan is the very first defenseman in league history to win the Art Ross. He had a stellar campaign with 10 goals and 28 assists for a 38 point campaign in just 16 games played. Dan a truly class act that on most nights would rather pass the puck than shoot. Playing in only his 3rd season has won awards in each of them and will surely continue as his career in the PCOHL continues. He is a asset to our league. Congrats Mr. Barrett!

The Vezina for Best Goaltender goes to Finlands #1 Frank Rispoli. Frank lead the league with a 3.00 goals against average. This is Franks 4th Vein trophy win, 3 in the last 4 years. Like a fine wine Frank gets better with age. Unfortunately Frank got injured early in this seasons playoffs and is rehabbing to get back in next year. Congrats Frank!

The Rocket Richard trophy for most goals scored goes to Polands #12 Robin Flumerfelt. Robin scored 20 goals this season this 5th in the PCOHL. Not sure if we can call Robin a sniper but he knows how to put the biscuit in the basket and this season he is our very best. He spent the most time with Brenda so maybe she is the reason Robin scored so much. Well done Robin!

This years Calder trophy for best rookie of the year goes to USA #1 Art Senkowski. Although this was his official rookie year Art has been a fill in back stop for us for years. A top goaltender for sure and a well deserved winner as our best rookie. Special shout out to Polands Paul Barbosa who collected some votes as well with his stellar 24 point season. Congrats Mr. Senkowski future Polish back stop if his agent can swing a deal.

The Norris trophy for Outstanding Defenseman goes to Finlands #12 Sal Guerra. This is Sal’s 4th Norris trophy win and is a top 5 defensemen year n year out. A big presence on the blue line who has averaged a point a game for his career. Long time member both in the league and on the Exec and truly a class act. Rarely spends any time with Brenda except when she has to get paid. Honourable mentions out to Polands Robin Chantaj also getting some votes this season. Congratulations Sal!

The Hart trophy for our leagues Most Valuable Player goes to Finlands #9 Marcelo Diluzio. Marcelo and elite centreman lead the league in scoring for most of the season only to be passed in the last week by Barrett. Marcelo finished 2nd with 17 goals and 17 assists for a 34 point season in 17 games. Whats with the number 17????? In only his 3rd campaign in the PCOHL Diluzio already has over 100 career points. He was definitely the leader of the Fins record breaking season this year and is hoping to win his 2nd Gold medal. Congrats Marcelo!!

This year Selke Award for Most Improved Player goes to Polands #3 Frank Nweisser. Frank a veteran had a 19 point season this year versus an 8 point season last year. Frank a hard working 2 way forward helped lead his Polish team to a 2nd place finish this season. Honorary mention also goes out to Swedens Ron Cormier and to Canada’s Ron Chantaj for getting some votes this season in our balloting. Great job Frank and congratulations!

So only one more individual award still to be decided and thats the Conn Smythe for Most Valuable in the Playoffs. Will select after our Championship Night. Please reach out with the Exec and congratulate all of our individual award winners.

Week 5 Playoff Recap

On Easter Sunday evening we completed our Playoff Round Robin games and with so much at stake good crowds came out to watch.

Early game between the #1 seed Finland and #2 seed Poland.  Poland already eliminated from Championship night were playing for pride in their last game of this 30th season and with a win would send the Fins to the Bronze game and send the idle USA team to the Gold game.  Many Americans were out cheering on the Polocks in this big game.  The first period had much entertainment.  Finland opens the scoring early.  Poland ties up the game at 5:05 and then take the lead at 3:47.  The high flying Fins tie up the game at 2’s at 1:55 and thats how the 1st period ends.  Finlands top forward Diluzio and Polands top defensemen Chantaj both get ejected from the game before the opening period ends.  Drama now set for the final 2 frames.  Poland takes back the lead in the first 30 seconds of the 2nd.  Finland ties it up a minute later.  Finland go on top at 12:52 but the Polocks score twice to close out the 2nd on top 5-4.  Americans in the stands cheering wildly.  The tension was mounting through out the 3rd as the Fins tie up the game at 9:42 of the 3rd.  Action was heavy at both ends of the pond.  The idle Americans back stop Senkowski was filling in for the injured Finland Vezina goalie Rispoli was standing tall for the Fins.  And as the clock ticked off to zero this game ends in a 5-5 tie and vaults the #1 seed into the Gold game.  Poland went 0-3 on the PP and Finland went 0-1.  Finland got goals from Diluzio, Annan, Fletcher, May and Ianno.  Poland got 2 goals from McCormick and singles from Byer, Coffin and Robb.  Players of the Game went to Finlands #19 Enzo Ianno.

And for Polands last game of the season it went to their one true lifetime Polock Eddie Kuzniewski.  Gin dobrei!!!!!!

What happened to that Polish moustache?????

Late game between the #3 seed Sweden and the #5 surging seed Canada.  Sweden needing a tie or win to go for Gold and Canada needing a win to repeat what last years #5 seed Montreal did and go to the Gold game.  Both teams score twice in the opening frame.  All red and white in the 2nd period as they out score the Swedes 3-1 for a 5-3 lead going to the final period.  Tension on both benches as 15 minutes to play to decide their Championship night games.  The Ide brothers stood tall stopping all shooters.  Sweden get a late power play and score just as the penalty ends making it a 5-4 game with 90 ticks left on the clock.  Sweden pulls their goalie and push but an empty netter from Canada with 7 seconds to go closes out this tilt with Canada winning 6-4 and shocking the world head to the Gold medal game.  Canada went 1-1 on the PP and Sweden was 0-2.  Sweden got goals from Chamberlain, Peacock, Sharp and Cormier with a beauty.  Canada got 2 goals from Cummings and Desrosiers and singles from Julius and Kidd.  Players of the Game went to Swedens #15 Ron Cormier.

And for Canada the hero #11 Jay Cummings.

So all is set for this Friday, April 17 at Port Credit arena.  Our 30th season will come to an end with our Championship Night.

At 7:15 pm our infamous ‘Kiss your Sister’ Bronze medal game between the USA and Sweden.  Sweden won the regular season series with the USA 3-2.  Sweden also beat the Americans in the Playoff round robin game 5-3.  Should be a close one.

The 8:30 game will be for Gold as the #1 seed Finland will do battle with the #5 seed Canadians.  Finland went 4-1 vs Canada in the regular season (or as the Canadians say during the pre season, sand baggers!!!!) and Finland spanked the Canadians 8-2 in their Playoff round robin game BUT anything can happen.  Can Canada shock the world???  You gotta come out to watch it this Friday evening!!!

Reminder to bring your sweater and socks this week and try and make arrangements to pass onto a teammate if you know you will be away.  Also our deadline for applications and your $50 deposit to secure your spot for next season is due this Friday evening as well.  Either give to Gary Julius, any Exec or your Team Rep.  All apps and deposits go to Sal Guerra our Treasurer.  You can do your deposit through e-transfer to Sal as well.

See you all on the ice one last time!!!

Week 4 Playoffs Recap

Last Fridays week 4 Playoff round robin is in the books and some interesting games.

Early match between the undefeated rested Swedes and the 1 and 1 Fins.  Finland looked solid in the opening frame out scoring the Swedes 3-1.  The play was basically all in the Swedish zone and only Gordie Ide kept this from blowing up.  The listless Swedes had nothing in the tank for the 2nd frame as the Fins score 3 unanswered goals for a 6-1 lead.  An early Swedish goal in the 3rd was the only final period marker and the Fins have a big bounce back game winning 6-2.  Sweden was 1-1 on the PP and Finland was 0-0.  Finland got 2 goals from Sal Guerra and singles from Henry Krajewski, Steve Ferrin, Joe Cosentino and Enzo Ianno.  Sweden got a goal from Rukavina and Moe Connell.  Players of the Game went to Finlands #19 Enzo Ianno.

And to Swedens goalie #1 Gordie Ide.

Gord Ide.SWE

Late game between USA and Canada was a big one.  USA go out on top 2-1 after the opening frame.  Canada scores the only 2 goals in the 2nd to take a 3-2 lead.  USA tie it up with 5 minutes to go.  A late Canada goalie injury shuts this game down at 3-3.  WTF is going on with all our goalie injuries?????   Big point for both sides.  USA went 1-2 on the PP and Canada was 0-0.  Canada got goals from Leo Brideau, Michael Kidd and the ageless Gary Julius.  Dad got a penalty too, fire in the belly!!!!   USA got goals from George Karabinis, Murray Russell and Tim Randa.  Players of the game went to USA #5 Dan Barrett.

And to Canada Michael Kidd.

So with only one more scheduled round robin games here is what we have calculated out.  Our 2nd seed Poland has now been officially eliminated from Championship Night BUT can play quite the spoilers this week.  USA who will be off needs Poland to beat Finland and they will go to the Gold game otherwise any other scenario USA play the Kiss your Sister Game.  Maybe a few Americans will be out Sunday night to watch that game and cheer the Polocks on.  Finland wins or ties against Poland they go to the Gold game, lose they play for Bronze.  Sweden wins or ties Canada they go to the Gold game, lose they play for Bronze.  And a Canada win puts them in the Gold game, a loss or tie puts them in the Bronze game.  mmmm the 5th seed team may go back to back to a Gold game.  Shock the World Canada!!!

So Poland please bring your sweater and socks this Sunday and we will be taking a team photo on the ice following your game.

This week there will be NO games on Friday, April 14 as it is Good Friday.  This week the games will go on Sunday, April 16 at Port Credit arena.  First game has a puck drop of 7:30 pm with Finland playing Poland.  The late game is at 8:45 pm as Sweden will do battle with Canada.  USA is off but will be playing Championship Night the following Friday.

Don’t forget to get your application/waivers filled out and signed for next season along with your $50 deposit to secure a spot.  If you will not be returning next season please let us know as soon as you can.  Any players who know they will be away Championship Night please make arrangements to get us your socks and sweaters.

Cheers and see you all on the ice!!!

Week 3 Playoff Recap

Well, well, well right when you think you know everything, its turns upside down.

Last weeks games completed our 3rd of 5th round of playoff robin games.

Early game between our record breaking winning 1st seed Finland and our 4th seed depleted lineup of USA.   The Americans with only 9 skaters and Finland with a full squad did not look good for the red, white and blue.  But hey Donald Trump actually won the election sooooo anything can happen.  And so it did.  USA up 2-0 after 1.  3 more American goals in the 2nd for a 5-0 lead, wtf?????  2 more goals in the final period made this a 7-0 SHOCK the world win for the Americans.  There was also 2 goals scored by the Americans called back and the game was called with 5 minutes to go as Finlands backstop was helped off the ice.  USA went 0-1 on the PP and Finland was 0-0.  USA goals, 2 from Tim Randa and 2 from Rob McKean and singles from Jim Maguire, Have Mihalic, and Tony Carlisle.  Players of the Game went to Finlands Frank Rispoli.

And for the Americans Mark Plewes with a great effort.

Special shout out to USA shut out backstop Art Senkowski.

Late game between a desperate Poland squad and the surging Swedes. Sweden scored the lone goal in the opening frame.  Deja vu in the 2nd as Sweden took a 2-0 lead into the final frame in this tightly contested battle.  All Swedes in the final frame as they score 3 unanswered goals for a sound 5-0 victory.  Poland went 0-3 on the PP and Sweden was 1-2.  Sweden got 2 goals from Patty Sharp with a 4 point night, singles from Moe Connell, Ron Cormier, and Mike Rukavina.  Players of the Game went to Polands Rich Chalovich.

Thats a sad face on Richard eh???

For Sweden honors went to Patrick Sharp.

Pat Sharp POGSharpB.SWE

Handsome devil!!!  Special shout out to Gordie Ide.  2 shut outs in one night I do not think ever happened in our history.

Gord Ide.SWE

So 2 shocking scores has left this our 30th season up for grabs.  Sweden is the only team that has locked a spot in one of the 2 Championship night games.  The other 4 teams still are in play but some may need some help.  Poland has its backs against the wall and needs to beat Finland in their last game or could be a 2nd seed team shut out Championship night.  USA, Finland, Canada and Sweden all still have an opportunity to play for Gold.

This weeks games will go Friday, April 7, 2017 at Port Credit arena.  Early game puck drop is at 7:15 pm as the 1 and 1 Fin’s will do battle with the undefeated Swedes in a big game.  The late game is scheduled for 8:45 pm with USA and the rested Canadians.  Poland gets the week off.

See you all on the ice!
